Facial Rejuvenation

The mirror never lies. More than any other part of the human body, we are most sensitive about the appearance of our face and neck. We notice even slight changes caused by aging. Fortunately, many of these effects of time can be rectified with simple procedures performed here at the center.

Rejuvenation of the face and neck areas includes numerous surgical and non-surgical options. The most commonly requested procedure is the facelift, but eyelid surgery and brow lifts are becoming popular.

Facelift

This procedure can “set back the clock” by removing excessive facial wrinkles and sagging – the most visible signs of aging. A facelift is done by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and reshaping the skin of the face and neck. Incisions are placed inconspicuously so they go virtually unnoticed.

The procedure itself is carried out using general anesthesia along with local anesthesia in the surgical area. Within a week after the operation, swelling and bruising are largely resolved and stitches are removed. There is some short-term discomfort, which can be controlled initially by prescription pain medication followed by OTC remedies like Motrin® and Aleve®.

Brow lift

Even the most pleasant personality can develop a “frowny face” over time. The deepening creases across the forehead or high on the bridge of the nose can add years to one’s appearance. A brow lift, sometimes called a forehead lift, restores a more youthful, refreshed look. This is accomplished by tightening skin of the forehead through incisions either along the hairline or behind the hairline. The eyebrows are raised to a more attractive position while any droopy skin around the eyes is tightened and forehead wrinkles are softened. IV sedation or twilight anesthesia is used during the one- to two-hour procedure. Some swelling and bruising may last up to ten days and sutures are generally removed during that period.

Eyelid surgery

Next to breast augmentation and nasal reshaping, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is America’s most popular plastic surgery procedure. Droopy eyelids can impair vision, while puffiness and bags under the eyes can be unattractive. Blepharoplasty is performed to remove excess fatty deposits – usually along with excess skin – from the upper and/or lower eyelids. In order to achieve optimum results, Dr. Terranova may recommend a brow lift or face lift in conjunction with the blepharoplasty.
After surgery, there will be some swelling and bruising, though vision should be unaffected. An ointment to prevent dryness will likely be required for a week or two.
